A Minute With Sylvie Carrier Binette
Sylvie Carrier Binette, a longtime Farmington resident, brought decades of educational and business experience with her when she joined Farmington’s Board of Education in 2019. Sylvie has a degree in child development, taught pre-school for many years and is a “head-teacher” certified educator. As the owner-operator of an educational business in Farmington, Sylvie is also an entrepreneur.
Sylvie’s first business venture was to establish and operate an early learning center in Bristol. Eleven years later, in 2017, she opened a second center, the Carrier Academy of Learning, in Farmington. The Academy employs teaching professionals and uses age-appropriate teaching strategies to ensure high quality care and student achievement. The Covid-19 pandemic brought challenges for her businesses, but Sylvie handled them flawlessly and her learning centers remained open. Owning these businesses has given Sylvie significant experience with budgeting, purchasing, hiring and facilities, as well as state and local regulations. The Academy’s success is a testament to Sylvie’s experience, strong work ethic and commitment to student and family needs, qualities that correlate nicely with the work of the Board of Education.
As an educator and entrepreneur, Sylvie is a member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children and the Women’s Development Center. In addition, she recently became a corporator of a local bank. As a Board of Education member, Sylvie serves on the Policy and Green Efforts Committees. And finally, as a member of the Farmington community, Sylvie has volunteered at her church and with the FHS Basketball Booster Club.
When not working or volunteering, Sylvie can be found enjoying outdoor activities like boating, skiing, snowboarding and snowmobiling with her family. She has been married to Brian for 22 years. Their son Tyler is a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning technician, and their son Kevin is a Farmington High School student. Sylvie also enjoys spending time outside at her family farm.
