A Minute With Johnny Carrier

As the father of five school-age children and a business owner, Johnny Carrier is the epitome of a busy guy.  A typical day for the community-minded Vice President of the Carrier Group, Inc., a residential building company known as By Carrier, begins early and ends with the conclusion of a local committee or board meeting, often late in the evening.

A professional engineer and certified Green Builder who has been associated with the building trades since he was thirteen years old, Johnny Carrier unselfishly shares his knowledge, time and resources with Farmington volunteer organizations and State boards.  As a member of the Farmington Zoning Board of Appeals since 2012, Johnny considers whether requests for variances from zoning regulations are warranted where strict interpretations of the regulations would result in unnecessary hardships for property owners.  In 2010, Johnny combined his passion for the outdoors with his knowledge of construction and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and served on the Railroad Avenue, Unionville, Farmington River ADA Fishing Access Committee.  With help from Johnny’s company and other local vendors, an area was created off the bike path for persons with physical challenges to fish and enjoy the Farmington River.  Johnny also served on the committee that built the Greg Warren Memorial Field House at Farmington High School.  Thanks to his fundraising and construction efforts and those of the building committee, a modern concession stand located near the football field, became a reality in 2011. Johnny has also been a member of both the 2016 and 2019 Farmington High School Building Committees.

At the State level, Johnny currently serves on the Department of Administrative Services Codes & Standards Committee which is made up of twenty-one building industry members who oversee Connecticut’s building code regulations.  Johnny also served on the Department of Public Health’s Code Advisory Commission regarding subsurface sewage and septic systems, and as the homebuilding industry representative to the Department of Energy & Environmental Protection’s Low Impact Design Task Force regarding water quality and stormwater systems.

Johnny’s contributions to the community do not end with his service on boards and committees.  In the recent past, Johnny and the Carrier family have hosted six Farmington Republican Town Committee’s fall fundraisers at Johnny’s Farmington home, serving delicious homemade beef stew and other dishes to attendees including notable Republican candidates for state and local offices.

Over the years Johnny has been recognized several times as a leader in his field.  In 2010, the Hartford Business Journal (HBJ) included Johnny in its “40 under Forty” annual list of outstanding young professionals from the Hartford area who excel in their industries, are motivated by challenges and are role models for their peers.  Johnny is a longtime member and current Life Director of the Home Builders and Renovators Association of Central Connecticut (HBRA), an interest group whose mission is to protect the American dream of housing opportunities for all, while working to achieve professional success for its members who build communities, create jobs and strengthen the economy.  The HBRA awarded Johnny the Builder of the Year award in 2010.  In 2017, Johnny received the President’s Award from the HBRA, and in 2019, the HBRA awarded Johnny the prestigious Irving R. Stitch Award.

As an avid sportsman, in his leisure time, Johnny enjoys outdoor activities like archery, camping and snowmobiling with his wife Alexis, daughters Presley, Paisley, and Piper, and twin boys Easton and Hudson.Johnny recently began teaching his nephews and daughter Presley, the sport of roller hockey, a sport that he plays and has coached.
